Contrary to what most believe, a higher thread count doesn't necessarily indicate a better quality sheet. The thread count is the number of threads that fit in one square inch of fabric. Anything above a 500-thread count is not necessarily better than lower-thread count options. In fact, a higher thread count can point to the use of a lower-grade cotton. To maintain the durability of the sheets despite low-quality cotton, manufacturers will increase the ply or the number of strands used to make the thread. Single-ply threads are created with one single string of yarn, while multi-ply thread is created by twining two or more threads together to create one yarn. Multi-ply threads tend to be heavier, of lower quality, and can trap heat because of decreased breathability.
Yarn count is another metric by which consumers can measure the quality of their sheets. Yarn count is a numerical measure that determines how fine or coarse the yarn is. For cotton bedsheets, the yarn count is determined by the number of 840-yard strands that make up one pound. So for example, Trees & Hugs uses 60s yarn meaning that it takes 60 yarns totaling 840 yards to weigh one pound. As the count increases, the yard becomes finer. In comparison, 60s yarn will be twice as soft and smooth as 30s yarn.
